ME, MYSELF AND ITP

Rough start to the year.

So far, 2019 has not been my friend.

Here's the thing. When you're never sick, you start to feel like you're invincible.

I know, it's a pretty dumb take on life, but when you've never been in hospital, or you're lucky enough to have never been in a bad accident and the sickest you've been in your 25 years of life is tonsillitis, then life seems pretty easy. Well, maybe not 'easy'. That's the wrong word. Life is far from easy.

I'm not saying that I thought I was Superman or anything. I live a pretty risk free life, I wouldn't even dare go skydiving. I've just never been able to picture myself dying. Morbid, I know. But I was still in the mindset of a 4 year old. I was going to live forever. Nothing bad will ever happen to me.

I guess you could say I was naive, maybe even selfish.

Even when I was little, the worst thing that happened was needing to get stitches in my head after running into a bookshelf. But that's my brothers fault, and a story for another time.

Anyway, after I got a rash on my legs, I didn't really think much of it. It was weird, but it wasn't itchy, sore or irritating. In the next couple of days though, it was still there and it was slowly spreading to my arms, and I was also starting to get random bruises everywhere. And when I say 'everywhere' I mean EVERYWHERE. My legs were covered, my arms were covered, I even had them on my stomach. So reluctantly, I booked an appointment with the doctor. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

He didn't seem too worried about it, but he sent me off to get a blood test, just to make sure my blood was clotting properly. I left the doctors feeling like I had wasted my time, he'd made me feel like I had been worried about nothing. "You'll only get a call from us if there is an issue with your blood test," he had told me. And with that, I left, thinking that was that.

At 7:35pm on the 18th of December, I received a phone call. And that's when things escalated.

Life as I knew it, was about to change.
